The Letter to the Great King Kaniṣka

When the heartless Lord of Death,

who destroys men’s powers without rhyme or reason,

approaches with the intent to kill,

what wise man can remain at ease? [60]

Therefore, so long as that extremely impatient one

has not loosed that unbearable arrow

which cannot be avoided,

give heed to your own welfare. [61]

Murders powerful beings without purpose.

While such murder is sure to come,

What wise person would be relaxed?

Hence, as long as that great unforgiving warrior

Has not fired the unstoppable arrow

From which there is no escape,

Strive for your own welfare.
